Andreas was particulartly interested in photographing the fairs, the religious and other festivals taking place in Famagusta, as well as recording any unusual events happening in his town. Among these were: the departure of Jewish refugees, in 1949, who had been detained in British military camps in the area of “Golden Sands” for about two years; the arrival of the ship that brought from Palestine to Famagusta in 1948 about four hundred Germans, members of a Protestant sect, and the floods that occured in December 1949, as a result of which tenty-nine people drowned and hundreds were left homeless. In addition, Andreas Soteriou produced a lot of photographs of the British military and civilian camps, which were located in the Famagusta District.
[…] Andreas Soteriou is undoubtedly regarded as one of the important photographers of the second generation of Cypriot photographers of the period 1930-1950. In addition, the originality and superb taste of the photographs he used for his postcards make him one of the most prominent postcard publishers of Cyprus.
